Reasoning with Multivariant Qualitative Spaces

چکیده

One of the fundamental problems in qualitative reasoning is to represent n-dimensional variable spaces, where states of a physical system are delimited by general hypersurfaces. It is impossible to handle such a situation by using conventional qualitative values, because they can take only the form of `lattices' of hyperplanes, each of which is orthogonal to a coordinate axis. We propose a framework for solving the problem by directly constructing symbolic descriptions of phase spaces which conserve the property of qualitative reasoning, i.e., we handle a class of physical models rather than a single instance. In the theory, the notions of multivariant qualitative space and qualitative region are used, which are respectively extensions of the concepts of quantity space and qualitative value into higher dimensions. A multivariant qualitative space consists of qualitative regions, topology, and geometric attributes of the regions. The geometric attributes qualitatively represent the normal vectors of relevant hypersurfaces. Behavior reasoning is carried out based on vector operations of the normal vectors and the time derivation of a state vector. The scheme has been implemented and applied to reasoning about the motion of rigid bodies constrained in a plane.

Singularities in Qualitative Reasoning

Qualitative Reasoning is characterised by making knowledge explicit in order to arrive at efficient reasoning techniques. It contrasts with often intractable quantitative models. Whereas quantitative models require computations on continuous spaces, qualitative models work on discrete spaces. A problem arises in discrete spaces concerning transitions between neighbouring qualitative concepts. A...

Qualitative Reasoning about Directions in Semantic Spaces

We introduce a framework for qualitative reasoning about directions in high-dimensional spaces, called EER, where our main motivation is to develop a form of commonsense reasoning about semantic spaces. The proposed framework is, however, more general; we show how qualitative spatial reasoning about points with several existing calculi can be reduced to the realisability problem for EER (or REE...

Multivariant Design and Multiple Criteria Analysis of a Building Life Cycle

A lot of data had to be processed and evaluated in carrying out multivariant design and multiple criteria analysis of a building life cycle. The number of feasible alternatives can be as large as 100 000. Each of the alternatives may be described from various perspectives (economic, technical, qualitative, technological, social, legislative, infrastructural, etc.). The problem arises how to per...

Lexical inference as a spatial reasoning problem

Humans are often able to draw plausible conclusions from incomplete information based on background knowledge about the world. As a substantial part of this background knowledge is of a lexical nature, a crucial challenge in automating plausible reasoning consists in learning how different words are semantically related. This paper argues that most of the lexical relations that we need for plau...

Qualitative Spatial Representations

The eld of Qualitative Spatial Reasoning is now an active research area in its own right within AI (and also in Geographical Information Systems) having grown out of earlier work in philosophical logic and more general Qualitative Reasoning in AI. In this paper (which is a slightly updated version of Cohn, 1997]) I will survey the state of the art in Qualitative Spatial Reasoning, covering repr...
